ERICKSON, SHERVEN, SHERWIN, SKJERVEN, THOESON posted by Eric Fosaaen on Monday, August 14, 2000

I am looking for information about the father of my wife's great great grandfather, Oliver Sherwin. Oliver's father was Ole Skjerven (changed to "Sherven" and later "Sherwin" in America). The following is what I know about Ole Sherven: "Ole Sherven Sr. and Ole Sherven Jr. moved to Calmar Township in 1851 (or 1850) along with Erick Stovrem, Ole P. Haugen, Andrew Kitlelsby, Thron H. Egen, and Thora Bagaarson." "Past and Present of Winneshiek County", Edwin C. Bailey (S.J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1861). "Ole Sherven was born in Norway on the 26th of July 1831. He went to school and worked on a farm in his native country. In 1850, he emigrated to America, landed at New York, then went to Albany, thence to Buffalo, and thence to Milwaukee by way of the Great Lakes. He remained three weeks in Dane county , Wisconsin, then with oxen drove to Winnishiek county, Iowa, took land, built a log house and remained there five years. He was married in 1853 to Miss Inger Thoeson. He came to Rice county, Minnesota, and settled in Wheeling, section eighteen, where he still resides. He built a log house in which he lived seven years then erected their present frame house and in 1878, he built a barn 40x64 feet with a stone basement, and in 1881, a granary 20x30 with an addition 12x20. Mr. and Mrs. Sherven were blessed with eight children, five of whom are living; Oliver, Theodore, Andrew, John, and Edward. Mrs. Sherven died in 1870, thirty-eight years of age. In 1876, he married Miss Maria Erickson and they have one child, Julius. Mr. Sherven has held a number of local offices and was the first Assessor of the town." "History of Rice County", Rev. Edward D. Neill (Minnesota Historical Co., 1882). The children of the first marriage were Oliver, Theodore, Andrew, John, and Edward. Andrew and Julius were still living in or near Nerstrand, MN in Rice County when Oliver Sherwin died in 1931. Ole Skjerven (or Sherven) may have been among a group of about 100 emigrants who sailed from Bergen to New York. Such a group that followed the same route to Winneshiek County is described in Nordmændene i Amerika, deres Historie og Rekord (Norwegians in America, their History and Record) by Martin Ulvestad (History Book Company, Minneapolis 1907), p. 77. Ole Skjerven may have come from the Ringerike region of Norway in Buskerud. There is a Brukt (a farmstead or land holding) called Skjerven which is bruktnumber 69 in the Hønen farm, gårdnumber 86 in that region.

MEEHL, MEHL, MIEL posted by Morgan McCabe on Sunday, August 20, 2000

My gmother, Clara Agnes, said she was raised in Faribault, b. 1900, to a large German family, last name Miel, Mehl, Meehl...? Mother's name was Caroline, I believe. Father killed by a bull around 1905. There were 10 or 12 children, several sets of twins, of which she was one (sister Cora Amelia). Both moved to WY (1918?). She often referred to herself as PA Dutch. If anybody has any info that will assist this search, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

CLOBECK, CLOEBEKE, KLOEBEK, KLOEBEKE, SCHWANDKE, SCHWANKE, SCHWANKIE, SCHWANTKE posted by Kim on Sunday, September 3, 2000

Hi, I'm looking for information on my great- grandfather John P. Schwanke who was born in 1872 in Usch, Germany/Prussia (present day Ujcie, Poland) "J.P." immigrated in 1888, arriving in Baltimore, settling in Faribault, MN for one year and finally moving to Kenosha, WI. His siblings were Praxeda, Stencil, and Paula, and his parents were Michael and Anna Clobeck or Clop. I am having no luck with this branch of the family, perhaps due to the great degree of variation in how the Schwanke name is spelled... also difficult because they originated in what is now present-day Poland, and a lot of these records have not been archived by the LDS researchers. Given the fact that J.P. was only in Faribault for one year, do you think there would be any records there that would offer further information? Also wondering why J.P. moved there for one year? Did he have other relatives, perhaps established Schwankes that lived there? I look forward to hearing from you, and hope we can make a match. Kim Please e-mail me at Kimici@aol.com
